Kogi State investigates deaths of four family members after eating amala

The Kogi State Government has launched a comprehensive investigation into the deaths of four family members in the Ihima community, located within the Okehi Local Government Area. The deaths reportedly occurred after the consumption of amala, a local delicacy made from cassava flour, served with okra soup.

Reports indicate that the victims, aged between four and 12 years, died in two separate families. Additionally, a family dog reportedly died after consuming the same meal, and several other individuals fell ill. Five victims are currently receiving medical treatment at the Confluence University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital in Okene.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has directed the Commissioner for Health to lead the inquiry, focusing on potential food poisoning or contamination. The investigation will involve examining food samples and evidence following established public health procedures to determine if environmental or medical factors were responsible. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation until the findings are released.
