Košice Children's Hospital to receive largest Slovak health investment

Slovak Health Minister Kamil Šaško announced a three‑storey extension and extensive building works at the Detská fakultná nemocnica in Košice, calling it the most important investment in the hospital’s history. The project, slated to begin on 3 August, will address long‑standing asbestos in the walls, create new pediatric departments, and increase the number of beds, especially for oncology and hematology, where demand exceeds capacity.

A new pediatric magnetic‑resonance imaging unit, financed from the national recovery plan, will be opened in pilot mode, allowing faster, low‑radiation diagnostics for children. The extension will also enable the Clinic of Children and Adolescents, currently based at L. Pasteur University Hospital, to relocate to the upgraded facilities. Hospital director Andrej Koman detailed that the construction will be carried out in three phases, reinforcing the building’s structural pillars before adding the new floors.

The modernization follows earlier upgrades funded by European structural funds, bringing the total investment in the facility to roughly €15 million, though the current expansion is described as the largest ever undertaken.
