Eastern European hospital expansion projects

In late July 2026, two major health‑care infrastructure initiatives were announced in Central and Eastern Europe. Slovakia’s Health Minister Kamil Šaško unveiled a three‑storey extension for the Košice Children’s Hospital, describing it as the largest investment in the facility’s history. The €15 million project, beginning on 3 August, will remove asbestos, add new pediatric beds—particularly for oncology and hematology—and introduce a pilot pediatric MRI unit funded by the national recovery plan.

Around the same time, North Macedonia announced a €74 million upgrade for the Clinical Hospital of Tetovo, aiming to attain university‑clinic status. The funding will support a new gynecology clinic, an obstetrics‑neonatology centre, a nuclear‑medicine department, a five‑year administrative building, and a thoracic‑surgery unit. The expansion will create over 200 jobs and reduce the need for patients to travel abroad for specialised care.

Both announcements reflect a broader regional push to modernise hospital facilities, expand specialised services, and strengthen public health capacity through substantial state‑led investments.
