Kolkata hotel fire kills nine, including five Bangladeshi nationals

A fatal fire at the Shikha Inn hotel in Kolkata, India, has killed nine people, including five Bangladeshi nationals. Among the deceased is journalist Debashish Dutta, who died alongside his wife, their two-year-old son, and his father-in-law.

Following the tragedy, Kolkata authorities have launched inspections of hotels in the New Market area, issuing closure notices to buildings lacking proper fire safety licenses. This crackdown has caused a shortage of accommodation for Bangladeshi tourists, many of whom are traveling to India for medical treatment. Reports indicate that some hotels are exploiting the situation by charging double or triple the standard rates.

The bodies of the four Bangladeshi family members were returned to Kushtia, Bangladesh, for final rites. The local administration in Kushtia has provided 100,000 BDT in financial assistance to the bereaved families. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences regarding the loss of life.
