Overview

A fatal fire at the Hotel Shikha Inn on Mirza Ghalib Street in Kolkata resulted in nine deaths, including several Bangladeshi citizens. West Bengal Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul previously stated that establishments found in violation would be sealed immediately, providing guests 24 hours to vacate.

This regulatory crackdown has reportedly caused a shortage of accommodation for Bangladeshi tourists, many of whom travel to India for medical treatment. Reports indicate that some hotels are exploiting the scarcity by charging double or triple the standard rates.

Investigations into the fire led to the arrest of the hotel owner, Birेश्वर Mitra, and his lessee, Abu Zafar. Investigators allege the tragedy was exacerbated by unauthorized construction and a failure to adhere to fire safety regulations. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of life.
