Ghanaian hospital infrastructure projects see mixed progress

Ghanaian healthcare infrastructure projects are seeing mixed progress. At Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the cardiac catheterisation laboratory has been fully completed and is now operational following a redesign necessitated by space constraints. ADB Ghana Medical Systems Group has signed a one-year maintenance agreement to support the facility.

In contrast, projects at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) face significant delays. A 500-bed maternity and children’s block has been stalled for approximately 14 months due to non-payment to contractors. Project managers warned that the delay is causing construction materials to deteriorate and risk losing warranty protections. The project, which was redesigned from an 850-bed plan to a 509-bed facility due to structural defects, is currently 56 per cent complete in terms of civil works.

However, work is advancing on a new cardiology centre at KATH. The facility is reported to be between 67 and 70 per cent complete, with contractors aiming for a December 2026 completion date. The Parliamentary Select Committee on Health recently inspected the site, noting the progress of the cardiology lab while simultaneously calling for the urgent resolution of the stalled maternity block to prevent further waste of taxpayer funds.
