Ghana maternal healthcare infrastructure developments
Overview
Healthcare infrastructure projects aimed at expanding maternity services in Ghana are experiencing varying levels of progress.
In the Western North Region, construction has resumed on a 25-bed maternity block at the Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Hospital. The project had been abandoned for approximately 14 years since 2013. Regional officials have described the facility as a “state-of-the-art maternity block” intended to alleviate pressure on the existing nine-bed unit, which staff noted is “woefully inadequate.”
In the Ashanti Region, the 509-bed Mother and Baby Unit at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) remains stalled due to unpaid arrears to contractors. While previously reported as 70 percent complete, recent updates indicate civil works are at 56 percent following a redesign from an 850-bed plan to a 509-bed facility to address structural defects. Project managers have warned that the 14-month delay is causing construction materials to deteriorate and risks the loss of warranty protections. The Parliamentary Select Committee on Health has called for an urgent resolution to prevent the waste of taxpayer funds.
In contrast, other specialized medical projects are advancing. At KATH, a new cardiology centre is between 67 and 70 percent complete, with contractors targeting a December 2026 completion. Additionally, at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, a cardiac catheterisation laboratory is now fully operational following a redesign necessitated by space constraints, supported by a one-year maintenance agreement with ADB Ghana Medical Systems Group.
