Komnas HAM monitors investigation into fatal Jakarta protests

The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) is closely monitoring the legal proceedings following violent protests near the DPR/MPR RI building in late August 2026. The unrest resulted in the death of a resident named Bambang Setiawan.

Polda Metro Jaya has reportedly named 45 suspects out of 315 individuals questioned during the investigation. Komnas HAM officials, including Chairperson Anis Hidayah, met with high-ranking police officers at Mabes Polri to coordinate on the handling of the mass actions.

Komnas HAM is urging authorities to ensure the investigation is proportional. The commission has emphasized that while those involved in the riots should be held accountable, any individuals detained who have no connection to the violence must be released.
