Jakarta protest unrest and investigation

Overview

Following violent protests near the DPR/MPR RI building in late August 2026, Indonesian authorities have launched investigations into the unrest and the death of a resident, Bambang Setiawan.

The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) is monitoring legal proceedings to ensure investigations remain proportional. Komnas HAM Chairperson Anis Hidayah has met with police officials to coordinate the handling of the mass actions, emphasizing that individuals with no connection to the violence must be released.

Polda Metro Jaya has reportedly named 45 suspects from a pool of 315 questioned individuals. Regarding the death of Bambang Setiawan, police have initiated a Model A report, which Kombes Iman Imanuddin described as a manifestation of the state’s commitment to protecting citizens. Investigators have obtained autopsy results and identified two suspects believed to be involved in the assault through CCTV analysis and witness testimonies.
