Konitsa wildfire destroys 6,290 stremmata of forest in Greece
A major wildfire in the Konitsa region of Greece has been burning for nine consecutive days, destroying approximately 6,290 stremmata of forest within a Natura 2000 protected area. The fire, which began on August 31 and is believed to have been caused by lightning, has spread into the Aoos gorge, significantly complicating containment efforts.
Firefighting operations are being conducted under extremely difficult conditions due to the rugged terrain, steep slopes, and dense vegetation. The thick foliage has reportedly prevented water dropped by aerial assets from reaching the ground in several locations. While a decrease in wind speeds has provided some relief and improved the situation overnight, the fire remains active with multiple scattered hotspots and frequent flare-ups, including an incident near the Stomios Monastery.
Emergency services have deployed approximately 150 to 170 firefighters, 10 specialized hiking teams from various EMODE units, and dozens of vehicles to the site. Aerial support, including helicopters and Canadair aircraft, is being utilized to combat the flames in inaccessible areas. Residents in the Konitsa area have been placed on standby via the 112 emergency system as authorities work to prevent the fire from reaching residential zones.
