Konitsa wildfire enters tenth day of operations

Overview

A massive wildfire, reportedly ignited by lightning, has burned through the Trapezitsa forest near Konitsa, Greece, for ten consecutive days. The fire has spread through dense pine forests, reaching the Aoos gorge and threatening the town of Konitsa and the Stomios Monastery.

As of September 9, the situation has improved; active hotspots no longer form a single continuous front. However, full extinguishment remains difficult due to extremely rugged terrain, steep slopes, and dense vegetation. Firefighting operations continue to focus on the Aoos Gorge, utilizing five helicopters to conduct water drops in areas inaccessible to ground crews. Specialized forest commandos, foot patrols, and local volunteers—including residents and local monks—are working to extinguish scattered embers and prevent reignition.

The blaze, which began on August 31, has burned approximately 6,800 acres. The fire has impacted an ecologically significant area of the Northern Pindus mountains within a Natura 2000 protected area, raising concerns regarding the long-term environmental footprint.
