Konitsa wildfire enters tenth day of firefighting operations

Firefighting operations in Trapezitsa, Konitsa, have entered their tenth day. While the situation has improved and active hotspots no longer form a single continuous front, full extinguishment remains difficult due to the extremely rugged terrain, steep slopes, and dense vegetation.

Efforts have focused on the Aoos Gorge, with five firefighting helicopters conducting water drops in areas inaccessible to ground crews. Firefighters, specialized forest commandos, and foot patrols are working to extinguish scattered embers and prevent reignition. Local volunteers, residents, and even local monks have joined the effort to assist authorities.

The fire, which is believed to have started on August 31 due to a lightning strike, has burned approximately 6,800 acres. The blaze has impacted an ecologically significant area of the Northern Pindus mountains, raising concerns regarding the long-term environmental footprint.
