Konitsa wildfire continues for seventh day in Trapezitsa forest
A massive wildfire in the Trapezitsa forest near Konitsa, Greece, has been burning for seven days, fueled by strong winds and difficult terrain. The fire, reportedly caused by a lightning strike, has spread through dense pine forests and reached the Aoos gorge, threatening the town of Konitsa and the Stomios Monastery.
Emergency services have issued 112 alerts, advising residents to remain indoors with windows and doors closed due to heavy smoke. Authorities have banned access to the Aoos gorge and the path to Stomios Monastery to ensure public safety and keep access routes clear for emergency vehicles.
The firefighting operation involves approximately 150 to 170 firefighters, multiple forest ranger teams, and dozens of vehicles. Aerial support includes up to 13 assets, comprising aircraft and helicopters, which are conducting continuous water drops. The rugged topography and steep ravines have made ground access extremely challenging, forcing a heavy reliance on aerial intervention.
