Konkola Copper Mines partners with Axiom and VBKOM to boost exploration
Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has entered into a partnership with technical firms Axiom Group and VBKOM to accelerate mineral exploration and optimize operations within Zambia's Copperbelt. The collaboration aims to utilize advanced technology in geology, geophysics, and resource modelling to enhance mine planning and safety. KCM CEO Malcolm Mewett stated that the company possesses high-grade resources with a potential mine life of approximately 50 years.
Since Vedanta Resources resumed stewardship of KCM in July 2024, the company has invested over US$705 million into the operation. This investment has contributed to a significant turnaround, with overall production more than doubling and integrated production tripling year-on-year. Efforts have also focused on the Konkola Deep Mining Project (KDMP), where development rates have reached decade-high levels.
On a broader economic scale, Zambia is transitioning from acute debt crisis management toward active balance-sheet management. Analysts note that global demand for copper is being driven by the energy transition, specifically through the expansion of electric vehicles and the infrastructure requirements of artificial intelligence data centers.
