Konkola Copper Mines operational expansion
Overview
Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has initiated efforts to expand its operations in Zambia through a partnership with technical firms Axiom Group and VBKOM. This collaboration focuses on utilizing advanced technology in geology and resource modelling to enhance mine planning and safety. Following Vedanta Resources resuming stewardship in July 2024, the company has invested over US$705 million, contributing to a significant turnaround in production levels.
By July 2026, KCM reached a production milestone of 10,000 tonnes of copper in a single month, surpassing previous monthly averages of 8,000 to 9,000 tonnes. This output represented more than 11 percent of Zambia’s monthly copper production target for 2026. In response to this milestone, KCM implemented a K5.8 million reward initiative for employees and business partners. While the Mineworkers Union of Zambia welcomed the recognition, the union noted that productivity gains must be paired with improved worker safety and conditions.
