Konnor Griffin begins rehab for finger injury

Pittsburgh Pirates rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin is beginning his transition toward returning to the field following a six-week period of immobilization for a left ring finger sagittal band injury. Griffin, who has been on the 60-day injured list since July, is moving to the team's complex in Bradenton, Florida, to begin baseball activities including light swings and defensive work.

Griffin is eligible to return from the injured list as early as September 4. He expressed a goal to return at that time, though he noted he must monitor how the injury responds to increased activity. This injury follows a previous month-long absence in June due to a right forearm flexor strain.

Since his debut in April, Griffin has been a significant figure for the Pirates, recently signing a nine-year, $140 million contract extension. During his 59 games this season, he recorded a .276 batting average and 20 stolen bases. His absence has forced the Pirates to rely on Jared Triolo and Jacob Gonzalez at the shortstop position.
