Konnor Griffin injury and rehabilitation
Overview
Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Konnor Griffin has begun rehabilitation following a six-week period of immobilization for a torn sagittal band in his left ring finger. After moving to the team’s complex in Bradenton, Florida, to begin light swings and defensive work, Griffin transitioned to a formal rehabilitation assignment with the Double-A Altoona Curve.
Griffin was officially reinstated from the injured list on September 4. In his first game back, he made an immediate impact in a 1-0 victory against the Los Angeles Angels at PNC Park. After reaching base, Griffin scored the game’s only run following an RBI double by Jake Mangum in the second inning. The win was supported by a dominant performance from Jared Jones, who pitched six scoreless innings with nine strikeouts. Relief pitcher Wilber Dotel provided two scoreless innings to preserve the lead, and Mason Montgomery earned his ninth save of the season.
Prior to his injury, which required placement on the 60-day injured list, Griffin maintained a .276 batting average with five home runs, 25 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases across 59 games. The 20-year-old signed a nine-year, $140-million contract extension in April. Pirates manager Don Kelly has emphasized Griffin’s importance to the team’s offense, defense, and base-running as the club remains in the National League wild card race.
