Karatay Lavanta Days festival draws thousands in Konya
The Karatay municipality in Konya held the fifth edition of the Karatay Lavanta Days, celebrating Turkey’s largest lavender garden on the former rubble site in Karaaslan neighbourhood. Mayor Hasan Kılca said the 340‑dunam area was transformed into a green space to promote sustainable urban development and tourism.
The opening ceremony attracted thousands of visitors from Konya and other regions. Activities included stalls selling lavender‑flavoured ice‑cream, drinks, soaps and oils, a children’s programme of theatre, animation and games, live concerts, an open‑air cinema, and a classic‑car exhibition featuring 1950s models. The nearby Mevlana Rose Park, with about 190 rose varieties, also welcomed guests.
Attendees praised the event, giving the festival high marks for the quality of the lavender products and the variety of attractions. The celebration is presented as a model of environmentally‑focused local governance and a boost to Konya’s nature‑based tourism.
