Kordofan faces mass displacement due to war and flooding

The Kordofan region in Sudan is facing an escalating humanitarian crisis as intensified armed conflict and seasonal flooding force thousands of families to flee their homes. According to assessments by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 200,000 people have been displaced due to the combined impact of violence and destructive rains.

Between October 25, 2025, and June 23, 2026, the IOM displacement tracking mechanism recorded 219,319 displaced persons from the Kordofan region, which includes North, South, and West Kordofan. These movements were driven by 109 identified incidents, with families seeking refuge in other parts of Kordofan or in states such as Khartoum and White Nile. The situation continues to deteriorate as the ongoing war, which has lasted over three years, destroys infrastructure and disrupts essential services, placing immense pressure on humanitarian organizations attempting to assist the vulnerable population.
