Korle Bu Teaching Hospital begins work on 400-bed Mother and Child Block

Site preparation and land clearing have officially commenced at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra to facilitate the construction of a new 400-bed Mother and Child Block. This modern facility is intended to replace the hospital’s current maternity unit.

According to Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the project is part of a broader government investment in health infrastructure. The new complex will provide a wide range of specialized services, including obstetrics and gynaecology wards, labor and delivery suites, operating theatres, and an Emergency Obstetric Care Unit.

Critical care capabilities will include Intensive Care Units (ICU), High Dependency Units (HDU), and Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). Additionally, the facility will house an In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, alongside clinics for fertility, reproductive health, and postnatal support.

To support clinical operations, the block will feature a diagnostic imaging department, laboratories, a blood bank, a central pharmacy, and a Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD). The site is also designed to serve as a clinical training hub, incorporating research and conference facilities for medical education.
