EU Commissioner criticizes Kosovo's Specialized Chambers law changes

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos has criticized recent legislative changes to the Law on Specialized Chambers in Kosovo, stating they conflict with the country's fundamental obligations to the European Union. Kos warned that candidate countries making backward steps in meeting standards risk their path to EU membership, emphasizing that progress must align with the rule of law.

In response, Kosovo's Deputy Speaker Vlora Çitaku argued that the changes aim to ensure a fair judicial process and respect fundamental human rights rather than evade justice. She suggested that disagreements with international partners are normal and expressed intent to clarify the law's purpose to the EU.

Political reactions within Kosovo have been divided. The LDK party defended its decision not to vote for the law, citing political consistency and a belief that the Specialized Chambers have not met expectations for true justice. Meanwhile, other parliamentary groups expressed commitment to supporting former KLA leaders facing proceedings in the Specialized Chambers while navigating the legislative debate.
