KLA leaders sentenced to 81 years by Hague Special Court
The Specialist Chambers in The Hague has sentenced former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) leaders to a total of 81 years in prison for war crimes. The ruling includes Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Redžep Selimi, and Jakup Krasniqi, who received sentences of 25, 18, 13, and 25 years respectively.
In response, the Albanian Parliament adopted a declaration expressing deep indignation and disagreement with the verdict, labeling it 'deeply unjust.' The declaration asserts that the KLA's struggle was a war for the liberation of Kosovo and opposes attempts by Serbia and Russia to politically instrumentalize the court process.
Kosovo's Ombudsman, Naim Qelaj, stated that injustice has occurred and emphasized that the only path to restoring justice is through an appeal in the second instance. He noted that the court has failed to build public trust among Kosovo citizens. Additionally, former KLA commander Shukri Buja criticized the proceedings, describing the court as political and biased.
