German citizen arrested after 1 million euros found at Merdare border

A German citizen has been arrested and detained by Kosovo authorities following an investigation into 1 million euros found at the Merdare border crossing. The funds were discovered on February 24, 2026, hidden within a modified compartment in the floor of a Mercedes Sprinter minibus with Albanian license plates traveling from Serbia toward Kosovo.

The discovery was made possible by a scanner donated to Kosovo by the United States. During questioning by the Special Prosecution of Kosovo, the suspect admitted that the money belonged to him but failed to provide evidence regarding its legal origin or explain his connection to the individuals who were transporting the vehicle at the time of the seizure.

The police have classified the criminal offense as “participation or organization of an organized criminal group,” while other reports indicate charges related to money laundering. The initial seizure in February also involved the arrest of three other individuals, including a police officer from Tirana who was subsequently suspended from duty.
