Kosovo law enforcement operations

Overview

Kosovo authorities have conducted separate criminal investigations involving robbery and organized crime.

In Gjakova, police arrested a suspect following an armed robbery at a RIA company branch on October 10, 2026. A masked individual using a knife reportedly stole approximately 8,000 euros from a cash drawer. The suspect was detained for 48 hours as a criminal case was initiated.

In a separate incident at the Merdare border crossing, authorities seized 1 million euros hidden in a vehicle entering from Serbia. The funds were discovered on February 24, 2026, concealed within a modified compartment in the floor of a Mercedes Sprinter minibus bearing Albanian license plates. The discovery was facilitated by a scanner donated to Kosovo by the United States.

A German national was arrested after admitting the funds belonged to him but failing to provide evidence regarding their legal origin or his connection to the individuals transporting the vehicle. The initial seizure also involved the arrest of three other individuals, including a police officer from Tirana who was subsequently suspended from duty. The suspect faces charges related to ‘participation or organization of an organized criminal group,’ with additional reports indicating potential charges for money laundering.
