Kosovo reports 20 workplace fatalities in 2026
Jusuf Azemi, head of the Kosovo Independent Private Sector Union (SPSPK), has reported that 20 workers have died on the job so far in 2026. Of these fatalities, 11 occurred within the construction sector, while 9 involved other professional profiles.
Azemi identified company owners as the primary responsible parties, stating they fail to prioritize sufficient workplace safety. He noted that in 95% of these cases, the cause of death is attributed to human error.
While acknowledging efforts by the Labor Inspectorate, Azemi also criticized government institutions and expressed concern regarding how courts handle cases involving worker deaths. He emphasized that responsibility lies first with company owners, followed by the Labor Inspectorate and the broader government.
