Kosovo to export three million tons of coal to North Macedonia

The Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK) has signed a contract with North Macedonia’s state-owned company, ESM, to export approximately three million tons of coal over a three-year period. The agreement sets a price of 24.40 euros per ton, excluding VAT, bringing the potential total value of the contract to roughly 73.2 million euros.

The contract allows for a volume deviation of plus or minus 30 percent. This export represents about one-eighth of the annual production of the Coal Production Division (DPQ). While KEK has stated that the agreement will not jeopardize domestic energy supplies or the operation of Kosovo’s thermal power plants, the move comes as the national energy system struggles with aging infrastructure and unplanned production interruptions.
