KPK considers summoning witness in Hajj quota corruption trial
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is considering calling Zainal Abidin to testify in the trial regarding alleged corruption in the 2023-2024 additional Hajj quotas. Abidin is noted for his close relationship with Nusron Wahid, the Chairman of the 2024 Hajj Special Committee of the DPR.
KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo stated that the decision to summon Abidin depends on the prosecutor's needs to clarify the chronology and construction of the case. The investigation involves allegations of fund flows to the Hajj Special Committee, including a reported USD 400,000 from a Hajj and Umrah organizer association. Additionally, the KPK revealed an alleged USD 1 million payment from Gus Alex to Zainal Abidin intended to secure interests related to the Hajj Special Committee.
The trial also examines whether the distribution of the 20,000 additional quotas—split between regular and special categories—was a unilateral decision or part of a bilateral administrative and diplomatic process between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia.
