Hajj quota corruption trial reveals alleged payments to DPR members
During court proceedings regarding the 2023-2024 Hajj quota corruption case, several key testimonies emerged. Former Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas questioned witnesses to clarify if he had ever issued orders to manipulate rules or solicit fees; witnesses, including former ministry officials, testified that no such orders were received.
Defendant Ishfah Abidal Aziz, a former special staffer to the Minister, admitted to receiving US$85,000 in two stages from a travel bureau staffer. Additionally, Aziz testified that 24 members of the DPR Commission VIII working committee had initially requested 3,000 Riyals each during a trip to Saudi Arabia, though he claimed he only provided 1,500 Riyals per person from his own honorarium.
Further testimony suggested a potential flow of approximately US$400,000 to US$406,000 via an intermediary named Erik, allegedly to fulfill a request from Zainal Abidin, a friend of Minister Nusron Wahid. The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) stated it will analyze these testimonies to fully reconstruct the case, which involves alleged state losses of approximately 622.09 billion Rupiah.
