KPop Demon Hunters 2 to receive theatrical release

The sequel to the animated film KPop Demon Hunters is expected to secure a theatrical release, following the massive streaming success of the first installment. While not yet officially announced by Netflix, reports indicate that former Netflix film chief Dan Lin helped facilitate the move toward a cinema release.

A deal between Netflix and Sony previously established plans for a second animated film, currently projected for a 2029 release. The franchise is expanding into a broader universe, with reported plans for a live-action movie, a stage play, and additional sequels to complete a trilogy. Other potential projects include a spinoff series and a short film.

Co-director Maggie Kang has noted that the first film left several narrative threads and backstories unexplored due to its 85-minute runtime. The original film became Netflix’s most-watched offering, leading to various commercial collaborations with brands such as McDonald’s, Fortnite, and LEGO.
