Kraków accident sparks calls for road homicide laws

A fatal car accident on Solna Street in Kraków has prompted calls for legislative reform in Poland. On Saturday, August 22, a vehicle driven by 26-year-old Hubert B. struck a family walking on the sidewalk. The collision resulted in the deaths of a 32-year-old couple, Mateusz, a legal trainee, and his wife Klaudia. Their 8-month-old son survived the incident but was hospitalized in serious condition.

The driver has been temporarily arrested and faces charges of causing a fatal accident through negligence. Following the tragedy, the Kraków City Council passed a resolution urging national authorities to introduce a new legal category in the penal code: ‘road homicide.’ This proposed classification would specifically target drivers who cause fatal accidents through extremely reckless behavior.

Additionally, local officials are calling for increased numbers of traffic police and transport inspectors, alongside the implementation of new technologies such as acoustic speed cameras to combat dangerous driving and road piracy.
