Kraków holds second round of extraordinary mayoral elections
The second round of extraordinary mayoral elections in Kraków has commenced, following the referendum removal of former president Aleksander Miszalski. Voters are choosing between two candidates: Łukasz Gibała, who led the first round with 36.38% of the vote, and Monika Piątkowska, who received 29.91%.
Polling data from OGB suggests Gibała holds a significant lead in the second round, with approximately 59.96% support compared to Piątkowska's 40.04%. The campaign has been marked by intense political friction, including accusations of disinformation and personal attacks. Former president Miszalski has publicly endorsed Piątkowska, criticizing Gibała's management style and political history.
While the election proceeds, the city is managed by deputy Stanisław Kracik. Beyond the political race, the city faces significant challenges including rising public debt, housing shortages, and infrastructure needs, such as the ongoing completion of the Kraków bypass.
