Kraków mayoral election: Gibała and Piątkowska head to second round
The mayoral election in Kraków is heading to a second round on October 11 between Łukasz Gibała and Monika Piątkowska. In the first round, Gibała secured 36.38% of the vote, while Piątkowska, supported by Koalicja Obywatelska and PSL, received 29.91%.
Debate negotiations have stalled. While Piątkowska proposed a series of debates, Gibała’s campaign announced they would only participate in a single televised debate involving all major news stations to avoid favoring specific media outlets.
Candidates' financial disclosures have drawn attention. Gibała reported significant assets, including real estate valued at approximately 3.8 million PLN and investments in securities. Piątkowska also maintains a substantial financial status.
Regarding governance, Gibała has signaled potential personnel changes in municipal offices and companies, stating he will verify appointments based on competence rather than party affiliation. He has also addressed infrastructure and policy issues, such as the feasibility of a metro system and tourist fees. Former President Bronisław Komorowski commented on the race, suggesting Gibała’s success stems from his status as an independent candidate rather than a party-affiliated politician.
