Kraków prepares for early mayoral elections following president recall

Kraków is preparing for early mayoral elections on September 27, following a May referendum that removed the previous president, Aleksander Miszalski. Recent polling indicates that Łukasz Gibała is the current frontrunner with 25.2% support, followed by Monika Piątkowska at 9.9% and Daria Gosek-Popiołek at 8.7%.

A significant portion of the electorate remains undecided, with 25.2% of respondents stating they do not know who they will vote for, a figure equal to Gibała’s current support level.

Candidate Łukasz Wantuch has warned that the political climate in the city has become volatile, suggesting that the new president could face another recall referendum before their term ends. Under local law, a new referendum can be initiated ten months after an election, meaning the political instability triggered by the removal of Miszalski could potentially repeat within the same term.
