Kraków to add 30 new trees to Main Market Square

Kraków has announced a tender to increase the greenery of the Main Market Square by planting 30 new trees. The project, which was selected by residents through the Civic Budget, involves significant technical preparations to protect the historic site.

To accommodate the trees, specialized underground planters will be installed to provide roots with necessary water and air while protecting them from the pressure of heavy foot traffic. The installation requires partial removal of the historic pavement, reconstruction of underground utility networks—including electricity, gas, and drainage—and the installation of permeable paving to direct rainwater toward the root zones. Archaeological supervision will be required during the construction process.

The planting plan includes various species: 10 trees (including oaks and silver limes) near St. Adalbert's Church, two small-leaved lindens near the Adam Mickiewicz monument, 12 field maples near the Cloth Hall, and six acacia trees along the northern and western sides of the square.
