Kraków Main Market Square greenery project

Overview

Kraków has announced a tender to increase greenery in the Main Market Square by planting 30 new trees. The project, selected by residents through the Civic Budget, involves complex technical preparations to protect the historic site.

To accommodate the trees, specialized underground planters will be installed to provide roots with water and air while protecting them from heavy foot traffic. The process requires partial removal of historic pavement, reconstruction of underground utility networks—including electricity, gas, and drainage—and the installation of permeable paving. Archaeological supervision will be required during construction.

The planting plan includes various species: 10 trees near St. Adalbert's Church, two small-leaved lindens near the Adam Mickiewicz monument, 12 field maples near the Cloth Hall, and six acacia trees along the northern and western sides of the square.
