Krk to receive new dual-level road and rail bridge

Croatia is planning a major infrastructure project to build a new bridge connecting the mainland to the island of Krk. The proposed 850-meter bridge will feature a dual-level design, with four lanes for vehicular traffic on the upper level and a railway connection on the lower level.

The new link is expected to be completed by 2031 or 2032 and will include a 900-meter viaduct and a 740-meter tunnel on the island. It will connect directly to the A7 motorway, starting approximately one kilometer southeast of the existing bridge. The current bridge, opened in 1980, will remain in use to alleviate traffic congestion, which can reach queues of up to 19 kilometers during summer months.

In addition to improving island accessibility, the railway component is linked to plans for a large container terminal in the Omišelj area. The project is currently in the preparatory phase, with environmental and necessary studies having commenced in early 2024. Construction is tentatively estimated to begin between late 2027 and 2028.
