Turkey's Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change has launched a major crackdown on microplastic pollution in the Mediterranean. Since July 1, authorities have conducted 604 inspections across six provinces, including Adana, Antalya, Hatay, Mersin, Gaziantep, and Muğla. These operations resulted in 19 facilities being suspended and 52 facilities receiving administrative fines totaling over 118 million TL.

Experts have raised alarms regarding the scale of the crisis. In Alanya, research by Prof. Dr. Sedat Gündoğdu revealed that microplastic levels in certain areas are 60 to 65 times higher than the Mediterranean average. Additionally, reports indicate that Turkey's plastic waste imports reached 503,000 tons in 2025, a 19% increase from the previous year, with significant amounts originating from the EU and the UK.

Inland water sources are also under threat. In Antalya's Kırkgöz water resources, a protected drinking water basin, divers discovered significant amounts of plastic waste, including bottles and bags, despite prohibitions on entry. Authorities are utilizing specialized sea sweepers to remove floating debris from the Mediterranean coastline to mitigate the environmental impact.
