Kroměříž Baroque grottas reconstructed via new 3D models

New 3D models have been created to reconstruct the appearance of the Baroque grottas at the Archbishop's Castle in Kroměříž. These artificial caves, which feature amethyst decorations discovered by art historian Jana Zapletalová, are currently undergoing investigation and restoration.

Developed by Jan Brus from Palacký University's Department of Geoinformatics in collaboration with the Olomouc Archdiocese, the models of the Apollo and Mine grottas provide a hypothetical reconstruction of how the spaces likely appeared in the late 17th century. The models incorporate elements from an 1839 German description, including light effects that mimic fire and a functional fountain. To simulate the original amethyst sparkle, optical fibers are used within the models.

Starting September 29, the models are available for free viewing at the Pevnost poznání science center in Olomouc. They are scheduled to be moved to Kroměříž next year.
