Ksamil murder: British national Sokrat Vata admits to killing Portuguese tourist

A fatal stabbing of 20-year-old Portuguese tourist Luis Miguel Varela Mendes in Ksamil, Albania, has led to a major criminal investigation. The incident occurred following a dispute at the Principote nightclub, which escalated into a physical confrontation on the beach.

Sokrat Vata, a 29-year-old British national employed at the local bar, has admitted to the stabbing during a court hearing in Sarandë. Vata claimed he acted instinctively during a chaotic fight and expressed remorse to the victim's family. Following the incident, Vata attempted to flee toward Tirana. He was apprehended by police after being discovered hiding in the trunk of a vehicle driven by Ezgi Parlak, a Turkish national, and Nuh Mahmutoglu.

Authorities have detained 45 individuals in connection with the case. This includes Vata for murder, Parlak and Mahmutoglu for suspected aiding and abetting, and two police officers accused of negligence or protecting the perpetrator. Political figure Sali Berisha has criticized the response, labeling the event a 'state murder' and alleging that security forces failed to protect the tourist.
