Murder investigation of Portuguese tourist in Ksamil

Overview

Following the murder of 20-year-old Portuguese national Luis Miguel Varela Mendes at the ‘Principote’ establishment in Ksamil, Albanian authorities have detained approximately 42 individuals for questioning. Sokrat Vata, 29, has been identified as the primary suspect in the fatal stabbing, which reportedly occurred in the early hours of August 18, 2026, at the ‘La Guerra’ venue. Vata, a security guard, was arrested after being found hiding in the trunk of a vehicle on the Levan–Fier road while attempting to flee. Vata, who has reportedly refused to provide a statement, has a prior criminal record in the United Kingdom, where he was sentenced to five years in prison in 2024 for drug offenses and dangerous driving.

Investigations have expanded to include Bekim Bulica, 36, the owner of the establishment, who is currently wanted by police. Bulica is accused of obstructing the investigation and assisting Vata in his escape; authorities noted he has a significant criminal history involving international cocaine trafficking and money laundering. David Heurtevent also remains at large.

Moisid Matushaj, a 24-year-old crime investigation specialist with the Gjirokastër Border Directorate, has been detained and barred from duty. Matushaj, who reportedly worked as a bodyguard for ‘Elite Security’ at the venue, is suspected of assisting the primary suspect in fleeing the scene. The incident has raised significant concerns regarding security standards and the employment of off-duty police officers in luxury tourism venues.
