Kütahya hosts 6th Turkey Historical Mines Conference
The 6th Turkey Historical Mines Conference, organized by Dumlupınar University (DPÜ), has concluded following sessions held at the Tavşanlı Garp Linyitleri İşletmesi. The event brought together archaeologists, historians, engineers, geoscientists, and industry representatives to discuss the intersection of mining and civilization.
During the closing remarks, DPÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Süleyman Kızıltoprak emphasized that mining is more than the extraction of ore; it is a phenomenon deeply linked to history, culture, technology, labor, and civilization. He noted that the naming of historical eras after copper, bronze, and iron underscores how minerals have transformed human production, trade, urban development, and warfare technology.
Kızıltoprak highlighted Kütahya’s significant role in the economic and cultural memory of Anatolia due to its underground resources and mining heritage. He advocated for integrating historical mining expertise with modern science, stressing that future studies must simultaneously address economic efficiency, environmental responsibility, occupational safety, cultural heritage, and sustainability.
