Cultural and mining heritage developments in Kütahya

Overview

In late September 2026, Kütahya, Turkey, saw significant developments regarding its cultural and industrial heritage. Following the 6th Turkey Historical Mines Conference, which emphasized the link between mining and civilization, Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy inaugurated the Kütahya Archaeology and Mining Museum.

As part of the ‘Turkey Century Meetings,’ the new museum consolidates five distinct themes: archaeology, city and ethnography, ceramics, mining, and children’s museum studies. The facility is designed to house the region’s diverse historical layers, including Phrygian, Roman, and Ottoman artifacts, with a collection of 62,701 items, approximately 3,300 of which are currently on display.

Ersoy reported that 612 million lira has been invested in Kütahya’s culture and tourism sectors over the last 24 years. This investment has seen licensed accommodation facilities grow from three to 75, increasing bed capacity from 324 to 4,407.

Additionally, in Manisa, Ersoy opened the Aerial Monitoring and Security Center for the Sardis Ancient City and Bintepe Lydian Tumuli. This center employs advanced technology, such as long-range drones with night vision, to protect the 75-square-kilometer archaeological landscape from looting and illegal excavations.
