Kulonprogo identifies elderly social assistance recipients linked to online gambling

In Kulonprogo, Indonesia, authorities have identified 785 elderly social assistance recipients as being potentially linked to online gambling activities. Data from the local Social Affairs Office (Dinsos PPPA) shows a total of 3,336 social assistance recipients are implicated through tracing National Identity Numbers (NIK) and e-wallet account numbers.

Officials noted that many elderly individuals may not be directly participating in gambling. Instead, their identities are often misused by younger family members to register SIM cards, e-wallets, or bank accounts used for gambling transactions. Additionally, some elderly users may inadvertently interact with gambling advertisements appearing on platforms like YouTube due to limited digital literacy.

To address concerns regarding identity theft and NIK misuse, citizens are advised to monitor their financial data. While the Financial Services Authority (OJK) SLIK system does not specifically track gambling site registrations, it can be used to detect if an identity has been used to apply for unauthorized loans or financial facilities.
