Kumamoto earthquake causes massive agricultural and infrastructure damage

Two weeks after the Kumamoto earthquake, the affected regions in Japan face severe agricultural, infrastructural, and humanitarian challenges. The Kumamoto Prefectural government estimates that damages to the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sectors have reached approximately 84.5 billion yen. Farmers report significant losses due to cracked rice paddies, damaged irrigation pipelines, and saltwater intrusion in ponds, affecting crops such as rice, strawberries, tomatoes, and pears.

Beyond agricultural impact, the disaster has caused widespread destruction of homes and roads, with many areas experiencing significant ground subsidence. Recovery efforts are being severely hampered by a critical shortage of manpower to distribute supplies and clear debris, particularly in areas with high elderly populations.

Survivors are also struggling with a triple threat of damaged infrastructure, ongoing water outages, and extreme heatwaves, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. These conditions have exacerbated mental and physical exhaustion among evacuees and relief workers alike. The death toll currently stands at 38 people.
