Kumamoto earthquake relief efforts focus on prolonged displacement
Three weeks after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture, authorities are shifting focus toward preventing disaster-related deaths caused by prolonged displacement. While 3,050 people remain in designated evacuation facilities, many others are sheltering in vehicles, tents, or relatives' homes, making it difficult for local governments to deliver aid and health services.
The death toll in Kumamoto has reached 39, including suspected disaster-related deaths. Residential damage is extensive, with over 32,000 buildings affected. In Yatsushiro City, water outages continue to impact approximately 7,380 households using public water systems, and some residents report that even well water is unavailable.
Relief efforts include the deployment of 'Instant Houses' by Professor Keisuke Kitagawa to provide rapid shelter, and the provision of municipal housing in Amagasaki City with waived fees. Private sector support has also been significant: singer Moritaka Chisato and the Upfront Group have donated 120 million yen, while Gunze Co., Ltd. has distributed approximately 100,000 pieces of clothing to affected areas.
