Kumamoto earthquake relief efforts expand across Japan
Relief efforts continue in Kumamoto Prefecture following the earthquake. The Japanese Red Cross Society has deployed mental health care teams and medical coordination staff to support affected residents.
Local and regional governments are providing extensive aid. Shiga Prefecture has sent 127 personnel for medical and administrative support, while Kyoto City has provided nursing staff, water supply, and municipal housing. Kakegawa City has also dispatched staff to monitor elderly residents in Yatsushiro.
In Kumamoto City, public health nurses have visited approximately 4,500 households to monitor the health of elderly and disabled residents to prevent disaster-related deaths. Meanwhile, non-profit organizations and volunteer groups are establishing free play areas to support the emotional well-being of children in shelters.
Despite these efforts, challenges remain. Official evacuation numbers do not include those living in cars or temporary shelters, and many residents face ongoing difficulties with water shortages and housing instability.
