Japan announces 147.8 billion yen support package for Kumamoto earthquake recovery
The Japanese government has finalized a comprehensive support package to aid reconstruction following the Kumamoto earthquake. The package, totaling approximately 147.8 billion yen in reserve funds, focuses on three pillars: rebuilding lives, rebuilding livelihoods, and disaster recovery.
Key measures include providing up to 3 million yen to households with totally destroyed homes and assisting with the demolition of partially destroyed structures. To stimulate the economy, the government will launch the 'Kyushu Support Discount' to subsidize travel and accommodation in the region, alongside measures to support the local food service industry.
Infrastructure and utility support includes repairing and cleaning wells in areas such as Yatsushiro and Kashima, as well as providing shuttle buses from evacuation centers to hospitals and schools. The government also plans to support small and medium-sized businesses with high subsidy rates to encourage rapid reopening.
In terms of labor, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has announced special measures for affected workers and employers, including extensions for filing procedures and special provisions for unemployment insurance and workers' compensation. Additionally, private sector initiatives are emerging, such as Redcliff Inc. using a drone show in Tokyo to promote disaster relief donations for Yatsushiro City.
