Kumamoto earthquake triggers relief efforts and cultural recovery initiatives
A major earthquake with a maximum intensity of 7 struck the Kumamoto region on July 28, 2026, causing significant damage across Kumamoto Prefecture. The disaster has prompted various relief efforts from academic and cultural organizations.
The Hokkaido Medical University School of Dentistry Alumni Association has established a disaster response headquarters to collect donations. These funds are intended to be transferred to the Kumamoto Prefecture branch to support those affected, including alumni who were victims of the quake.
In the cultural sector, performers Kikunosuke Onoe and Matsuya Onoe are proceeding with their theatrical production, ‘Take to Ken: Mahoroba of the Land of Fire’, scheduled for October 3–4 at Kumamoto Castle Hall. Originally planned as a 10-year commemoration of the 2016 earthquake to support reconstruction, the production now serves as a symbol of hope following the recent seismic activity. Performers have visited Kumamoto Castle to leave messages of prayer on the stones used for reconstruction, acknowledging the long-term recovery process required for the castle's fortifications.
