Kumamoto extends earthquake relief subsidies amid heavy rain warnings

Following the Reiwa 8 Kumamoto Earthquake that occurred on July 28, 2026, Kumamoto Prefecture has announced an extension for the Kumamoto-style support subsidy. The project implementation period has been extended from November 30, 2026, to January 31, 2027, to account for the ongoing impact of the disaster on local businesses and residents.

In conjunction with earthquake recovery efforts, Japan has faced significant weather-related challenges. The Japanese Red Cross Society reported that heavy rains caused by autumn rain fronts and moisture from Typhoon No. 24 have led to widespread flooding and landslides across various regions. Notable incidents include record-breaking rainfall in Nagoya, where hourly precipitation reached 104.5 mm, and extreme rainfall in Kyushu and Tohoku due to the formation of linear precipitation zones. The Red Cross continues to deploy medical and psychological support teams to earthquake-affected areas while warning of the increasing frequency of severe weather events linked to climate change.
