Kumamoto Prefecture Opens Free Bathhouses and Hotels for Earthquake‑Displaced Residents
Following the August 2026 Kumamoto earthquake, local authorities and private operators have opened dozens of onsen and bathing facilities at no cost to residents whose water supply was disrupted. Facilities in Ashikita, Minamiosaki, Kikuchi and other towns reported nearly 1,500 visitors on the first day of free service, and the Japan Maritime Self‑Defense Force’s transport ship Kunisaki has been providing mobile bathing and laundry stations at Yatsushiro Port.
In parallel, the Super Hotel chain launched a senior‑focused relief program, offering up to seven free nights of accommodation for residents aged 65 and older across its sixteen Kyushu locations. The scheme, running from 24 August 2026 to 3 January 2027, aims to reduce health risks associated with prolonged evacuation, such as sleep deprivation, heat‑related illness and deterioration of chronic conditions.
